The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and commonly known as Rio 2016, was an international multi-sport event that was held from 5 to 21 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This was the first time that the Olympic Games were held in South America and the second time they were held in a developing country, after the 1968 games in Mexico City. The event saw more than 11,000 athletes from 207 National Olympic Committees, including first time entrants Kosovo and South Sudan. The final two days of the event, 20 Aug 2016-21 Aug 2016, saw a flurry of activity as the games drew to a close.
The Jeux Olympiques, or Olympic Games, are a major international event featuring summer and winter sports, in which thousands of athletes from around the world participate in a variety of competitions. The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games were no exception, with athletes competing in 28 sports and 306 events. The games were a spectacle of athleticism and sportsmanship, with memorable performances from athletes such as Usain Bolt, Michael Phelps, and Simone Biles. The games also saw the introduction of new sports, such as rugby sevens and golf, which were added to the Olympic program.
The 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games were not without controversy, however. Issues such as the Zika virus, water pollution, and political instability in Brazil were major concerns leading up to the games. Despite these challenges, the games were largely successful, with many memorable moments and outstanding performances. The closing ceremony on 21 Aug 2016 marked the end of the games, with the Olympic flag being passed to Tokyo, the host city for the 2020 Summer Olympics.
